November Newsletter 2024

Dear Parents:

November promises to be a busy month in room 21. In our class, we are already seeing some favorite games happening on a regular basis and children asking for particular songs and activities to be repeated.

Reading:
In reading we will be reviewing our letter friends, Mr. M,  Mr. T,  Mr. H,  Ms. A, and Mr. F. The children look forward coming to school to see what new letter friends will be visiting us. This month, we will be meeting Mr. Z, with his zipping zippers, Mr. B, with his beautiful buttons,  Mr. N, with is noisy nose, Mr. H, with his horrible hair, Mr. P,  with his pointy patches, Mr. S, and his super socks, and  Mr. V, with his velvet vest. The children have been learning all about the letters, and their songs. They are also learning to recognize their name.

Social Studies/Music:

In October, we learned about Christopher Columbus, what he discovered and the names of his three ships. To reinforce this unit, we  read books and sang songs.

For Fire Safety, we discussed and acted out “Stop, Drop, Cover and Roll”. We learned what to do in case of a fire, and how to dial 911 for help. In October, we also learned about Community Helpers in our community and their jobs. We learned about Fall, and went on a nature walk and collected different color leaves while noticing the sign and changes that Fall brings us. The children did a great job and had fun decorating their Halloween pumpkins.

This month, we will learn about Thanksgiving. For this unit, we will learn why we celebrate this holiday, how to be thankful, and learn about family traditions. We will read books that will help the children learn more about Thanksgiving.  This month also brings us to  Election Day, and the White House.

Art/Cooking:
In October, we created many expressive art projects, and individual art to go along with Christopher Columbus, Fire Safety,  Community Helpers and Halloween. This month, we will continue to create individual and expressive art projects related to Thanksgiving, and the White House.
For cooking, in October, the children made a delicious Christopher Columbus snack, using apples and pretzels, for Fire Safety, they made a fireman’s ladder, using graham crackers, jelly, and pretzels, and for Halloween they made a ritz-cracker spider, with sun butter, pretzels sticks, and raisins. All of the snacks are healthy and delicious!

This month, we will be cooking for our Thanksgiving Feast.

Math & Science:

In October, we introduced the children to Farmers Market. For this unit, we studied fruits and vegetables and why it is important to eat them. We made a graph to see which of the fruits/vegetables have seeds and which do not. For a fun game, the children sorted different fruits and vegetables from picture cards and placed them in the correct baskets. We also learned how corn grows, and the many ways we can eat corn. In our classroom, we popped kernels and made delicious pop corn for the children to eat. â€‹â€‹â€‹

For science, we did a pumpkin volcano experiment, and learned what’s inside of a pumpkin. For science this month, we will learn and cover The Human Body, and  the 6 main body systems. Some of the topics we will learn and discuss are: The nervous system,  and the muscular and skeletal system, the respiratory system, the digestive system, the circulatory system. For this science unit, we will also include the 5 senses.

There are many ways we reinforce math concepts in the classroom. We count and identify numbers daily during Circle Time on our calendar along with practicing patterns. In October, we learned to sort with two objects. This month, we will be working on counting objects to three and matching number cards.
