September Newsletter 2024

Dear Parents,

A warm welcome to all to the 2024-2025 school year! I hope you had an amazing summer. I am very excited for another great school year and have your child in my class in room 21.
My name is Antonette Bonanno, and I will be your child’s teacher this school year. I have many fun learning activities planned for the year. This is my 7th year teaching at Laurel
Hill School. I graduated from Dowling College with a Bachelors in Early Childhood Education, and my Masters in Reading. My assistant this year is Mrs. Alyssa Farber.

Reading:
In reading, your child will be introduced to the Letter People that come to visit us from Letter People Land. Through music, stories and games these letters will reinforce letter recognition, introduce the sounds and teach the children how to write these letters. The first letter person your child will meet is Mr. M and his Munching Mouth. During the following weeks
your child will also meet Mr. T and his Tall Teeth and Mr. F and his Funny Feet.

Social Studies:
Our classroom themes are based on our social studies units. During the first two weeks of school, we will be learning all about the centers in our classroom, respect of our friends,
how to work together and how to follow rules to stay safe.  This will help your child adjust to their new classroom routine, teachers, and friends. In the month of September, we will also be learning about the season of fall and discuss the different activities we can do in the fall. We will explore different types of apples, and will graph our favorite kind.

Art and Cooking:
Both art and cooking will enhance our social studies units.  Students will have the opportunity to create individual and large scale cooperative expressive art projects. In September, we will be creating various art projects using different mediums to display in our classroom.

Our weekly theme related cooking activities are every Thursday and Friday. You will be receiving a notice for our first activity which involves apples for the month of September.

Math and Science:
This month we are reviewing shapes, colors and numbers 1-5.  Science is taught through experiments and discussions. This month we will learn how scientist work, what methods they use and will conduct experiments.

Outdoor Classroom:
This year the children will use our outdoor science classroom to learn and explore nature. Some of the areas that our children can explore are: a climbing/crawling area, a “messy
materials” area, a building area, a nature and art area, a music and movement area and a garden where we will be able to plant ourselves. We are so excited to continue these wonderful experiences with your children.

Star of the Week:
Each week a child will be chosen to be “Star of the Week”.  A poster will be sent home with your child. We ask that you help your child complete the poster and return it when done so
he/she can share with the class. They can bring in their favorite book to share with the class or something that is special to them for show and tell. A schedule of the special day for your
child will be sent home. I am looking forward to learning all about your child through our star poster and watching them shine as they share all about themselves with their classmates.

Character Counts:
We explore a program which emphasizes positive character traits we strive for our children to possess. The children will learn through discussions, role playing, and hands on activities
and teacher read books. This month we will focus on “Feelings” and then continue the school year learning about: Responsibility, Citizenship, Generosity, Fairness, Honesty, Respect,
Trustworthiness, Caring and Patience.

Color of the Month:
During the year we celebrate “color days”. On these days children can wear that special color of the month and participate in many color activities during the day. The color for
September is RED and will be celebrated on Thursday, September 26th and Friday September 27th.

Author of the Month:
Each month we celebrate an author. The author for September is ERIC CARLE. We will read many of his/her books.

Shape of the Month:
Each month we will be learning about a different shape.

The  shape for September is: CIRCLE.

Birthdays:
A child’s birthday is a special day and we will honor each child on his/her birthday. The birthday child will get a special birthday crown and a special birthday book made by their
friends. If you would like to send in a craft, or goody bags for the class, please make sure it does not contain any kind of food.
