Dear Parents,

January was a very busy month in room 21. We covered many topics, and learned about
Winter, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington , Abraham Lincoln, the White House., and
Lunar New Year. February, is going to be a month the children are absolutely going to LOVE.
This month, brings us to President’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Dental Health, and Force & Motion.
Reading:
So far in reading, we have met so many letter friends that come to visit us each week. The
children love greeting our letter friends each day listening to our letter friends songs, and
dancing. We play various games which help with letter and sound recognition. Our class is
also becoming experts at tracing each of the letters. This month, we will meet : Mr. G, with his
gooey gum, Mr. C, with his cotton candy, and Ms. I, with her incredible invention.
Social Studies:
In January, we learned about Winter, Martin Luther King Jr., the White House, George
Washington, Abraham Lincoln , Lunar NewYear, and Farm. We honored Martin Luther King Jr.,
by discussing his dream of peace. For our White House unit, we learned where the president
lives, how many rooms are in the white house, colors of the different rooms, and a few other
fun facts. We learned facts about George Washington how he cut down the cherry tree and we
discussed that we should never lie and always tell the truth. For farm we learned what
animals live on the farm, what is the job of a farmer, and what fruits and vegetables he grows
on the farm.

In February, we will be learning about Valentine’s Day, and Dental Health. We will discuss what
currency Abraham Lincoln is on, what number president he was and why is he is known as
“Honest Abe”. We will learn about Valentine’s Day traditions including giving the gift of
chocolate, and how to show love to friends and family. We will end this exciting month
introducing the children to Dental Health. We will learn the importance of brushing and
flossing our teeth, and we will talk about healthy and not so healthy foods that will lead us to
cavities. The children will play a fun game of “Musical Vegetables”, where each of the
children will hold up a picture card of a vegetable or fruit and name it.Art and Cooking:
In January, we created many art project to go along with Winter, Martin Luther King Jr., The
White House, George Washington, Farm and Lunar New Year. This month, we will be doing various art projects to go along with our Social Studies unit, which include Valentine’s Day, Dental Health, and Abraham Lincoln. The children look forward to making these fun crafts.

For cooking, the children made a winter banana snowman snack, using banana slices for the
body, pretzels for the arms, raisins for eyes/mouth, and a carrot for the nose. For George
Washington we made a cherry tree using pretzels, celery, and green grapes. For MLK Jr., we
made a peace snack using rice cakes, cream cheese and blueberries. This month we will be
making Valentine’s Pancakes, and for Dental we will make a healthy teeth snack using apples,
honey and marshmallows.
Math and Science:
In January, the children explored sorting, and matching objects based on their characteristics,
and we reviewed numerals 1-5. We will continue to work on numerals 6-10. This month,
through hands on activities, we will learn to identify, describe, sort, and compare. The children
will sort different shapes and we will discuss how each is different such as how many sides
and corners it has. We will talk about the shape of the month HEART, and what a heart
symbolizes. In science, we had fun exploring weather. We made a graph and asked the
children which of the four seasons what their favorite?. We discussed what kind of clothing
we wear in each of the four seasons. We explored the different types of weather and
conducted science experiments including: rain, snow, wind, and tornados. For one
experiment, we made “Borax Crystal Snowflakes”, the children really had fun with this hands-
on experiment. For MLK Jr., we did a diversity egg experiment and discussed even though we
may look different on the outside, we are all the same on the inside. This month, brings us to
